Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
