Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
