Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
